Why?

Conversation points for instructors

In the face of COVID-19 many students were asked to rapidly change their life. Normally most studio work happens on campus in a designated studio. This assignment was designed to help students readjust to their new space, wherever it was.

My goal was to have the students use the time working on the assignment to come to terms with the reality of their new situation. The idea was that through the observation and re-creation of their new space they would become comfortable with it, and we could continue the semester.

PROJECT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS

What?

Project Prompt / Challenge

Readjust. Sit, look, and observe your new studio space. Then create a painting that reflects this space.

How?

Strategy

Get your sketchbook - sit, look, and observe your new studio space.

  1. What does it look like at different times of the day?

  2. How do the colors and light change?

  3. What does it look like from different places in the room, such as your bed, the desk, or the doorway?

  4. Create multiple (6 or more) thumbnail sketches of your new space (a thumbnail sketch should be small and an investigation in composition and value).

  5. Digitally share your images with me.

  6. Identify 3 of your thumbnail sketches and make larger versions this time using color.

The final version

  1. Create one final larger piece.

  2. The size of the painting is open to discussion but should be a minimum of 12in x 16in.

Materials:

Oil, gouache, watercolor, acrylic, ink, (digital is allowed for initial sketches)

Timeline:

2 weeks
